Interview with UC Hastings' Dean of Admissions, Greg Canada

Interview With UC Hastings' Dean of Admissions, Greg Canada.

In the 19th installment of our 224 part series, Better Know a Dean, we sat down with Greg Canada, Assistant Dean of Admissions at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Even if you're not planning to apply to UC Hastings during this cycle, you'll definitely want to read what he has to say about:

- The dip in law school appications: "[T]here has always been a group of applicants who have viewed law school as a fall back -- a place where they could wait out a dismal economy and the worst that could happen is that they would get a nice paying job at a private firm and live a comfortable lifestyle. Even if you're not planning to apply to Georgia Law during this cycle, you'll definitely want to read what he has to say about:

- The importance of first-year grades: "
Because many legal employers interview during the fall semester of the second year for their summer associate programs, 1L grades are often the only thing they have to go on when deciding whether or not to grant an on-campus interview.  So, frankly, 1L grades do carry a lot of weight -- especially for students hoping to land a job at a large law firm in New York, Washington, DC or Atlanta.  Even if you don’t want to end up at a large firm, though, because most schools use first-year grades to determine honors like law review and journal participation -- honors and activities that almost every legal employer (large and small) value -- top grades will help open doors down the road to jobs...
