To learn how to prepare for law school so that you can truly excel once you begin your 1L classes, visit: Law Preview - Duke University School of Law.

During the first year, Duke Law provides its students with a solid foundation in the traditional areas of study as well as training in legal writing and analysis. In addition, “there are numerous opportunities to study closely in small groups with faculty, including seminars, research tutorials, and an innovative ‘Reading in Ethics’ series in which up to eight students read and study selected books with a faculty member in a year-long discussion group. The majority of all second- and third-year classes enroll fewer than 25 students.” (Duke Law Website)

However, students are certainly not limited to traditional course work. For example, students have the opportunity to pursue several interesting and diverse clinical experiences such as “representing AIDS patients in planning for custody of their children and other end-of-life matters; representing children before school boards after they have been expelled; drafting legal memoranda for government officials from foreign countries; assisting non-profit organizations in community development projects; and representing death row inmates in their last appeals for relief.” (Duke Law Website)

Those interested in joint degrees will be pleased to learn that roughly 25 percent of Duke Law students pursue a dual degree each year. Dual-degree programs include the JD/LLM in International and Comparative Law; JD/MA and JD/MS; JD/MBA and Accelerated JD/MBA; JD/Master of Environmental Management; JD/Master of Public Policy; JD/Master of Theological Studies; JD/MD; JD/PhD and JD/Master in Global Business Law.

For those students wishing to obtain an advanced degree, Duke Law offers the LL.M. and the S.J.D.
