Founded 1842 | ABA Accredited 1923

Established in 1842, the law school is one of the oldest law schools in the country. It was known originally as the Indiana University School of Law – Bloomington. However, in December 2008, the law school changed its name to the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in celebration of a $35 million gift that the school received from Michael and Janie Maurer.

Located on a wooded campus in the college town of Bloomington, IN, Indiana Law provides a beautiful and collegial environment in which to study law. The school is proud to be among one of America’s public law schools, and U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the school among the top 23 schools in the nation. Notably, the school is one of the few in the nation to offer a Summer Start Program that allows students the chance to take one course in the summer before their regular first-year classes begin.

During the first year, students engage in the traditional required foundation courses and a new required course called, The Legal Profession. Second- and third-year students have a wide variety of options and they can engage in the school’s varied courses, seminars or decide to pursue a concentration. Some of the recently offered seminars include Counterinsurgency and the Law, Voting Rights, and Biotechnological Innovation and the Law. The school also offers its students training in litigation and dispute resolution while maintaining a number of clinics in which students have an opportunity to deal with real clients. For those interested in traveling and studying in other parts of the world, the school offers a number of programs that allow students to study abroad for a semester. Finally, for students seeking an education beyond the JD, the law school offers a number of joint and advanced degree programs.
