Michigan State University of Law is a private institution of higher learning devoted exclusively to professional education in the law. Originally founded as the Detroit College of Law in 1891, it is the oldest continually operating independent law school in the Unites States. The College began as a humble school organized by a group of local law clerks and students for the purpose of replacing the bygone system of preparing for the bar by reading the law in the offices of local attorneys, and building instead a formal institution of legal education. In 1995, the Detroit College of Law affiliated with Michigan State University, a move which enabled it to expand its facilities and offer its students all the benefits of belonging to a Big Ten campus including multiply avenues of interdisciplinary study.

In its 100-plus years of graduating legal professionals, MSU Law has produced outstanding judges, lawyers, politicians and entrepreneurs that have made significant contributions to the wider community. Building on its foundation of practical education, MSU Law seeks to immerse its students in the local legal community and affords them easy access to externships and employment within the East Lansing area, in a range of government offices, nonprofit agencies, and private law firms. Fully accredited by the ABA and a member of the AALS, MSU Law is financially independent and receives no financial support from the state or the university.
