The University of Alabama School of Law is Alabama’s only public law school. Located in the small town of Tuscaloosa, Alabama Law has enjoyed a steady ascendance in the US News rankings during the past decade. Alabama Law has unabashedly welcomed this rise; upon release of the 2007 rankings that placed it 36th, Alabama Law School Dean Ken Randall declared to the Tuscaloosa News that “It is a proud day for our campus, the legal profession, and the entire state of Alabama. We have proven that our state can offer premier educational opportunities.” It is a rare day when a law school dean wholeheartedly embraces the US News rankings system as Dean Randall did. Whether a coincidence or not, Alabama continued its upward march (Roll Tide!) in the 2 years since Dean Randall’s kind words, jumping another 6 spots. All told, Alabama Law has risen more than 20 spots in just over a decade, from outside the Top 50 to its 2010 rank at #30 in the US News rankings—a feat that we believe has not been matched by any other law school in the history of the much-discussed, much-agonized-over US News rankings. Alas, Bob Morse (USNEWS' Ranking Guru) is a very fickle friend indeed -- in the 2011 rankings, Alabama Law slipped to #38.

In any event, no one disputes Alabama Law’s ability to offer students a quality education in a friendly and energetic environment for a reasonable cost. Students will find the traditional law school courses as well as opportunities to participate in a rich variety of electives, study abroad programs, and clinical experiences. In addition, the low student-to-faculty ratio helps ensure that the faculty is accessible. And for law students looking for a high-quality law school with a more conservative reputation, Alabama Law is tough to beat.
