First established in 1922 and then known as the College of Law, the University of Dayton School of Law is a part of the University of Dayton, founded in 1850. During the tumultuous times associated with the Great Depression, the College of Law closed its doors in 1935. The School of Law re-opened in 1974, and, within four years of graduating the new school's first class, the School of Law became fully accredited by the American Bar Association and a member of the Association of American Law Schools. It has been a leader in educating men and women in this region.

Graduates have become distinguished lawyers, prosecutors, judges, and CEOs. They have started their own law firms, argued in front of our nation’s highest courts, and remained active in their respective communities. The University of Dayton School of Law, through its programs, professors, and facilities, is dedicated to enhancing its tradition of preparing highly qualified legal professionals

The University of Dayton School of Law is part of a campus that is the largest private university in Ohio, enrolling more than 10,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. As a Catholic, Marianist institution, UD Law is committed to producing graduates who uphold the highest professional standards. With a population of approximately 850,000, the Dayton Metro Area offers the many amenities of larger urban areas while retaining its scenic, lush, and green open spaces. As the birthplace of the Wright Brothers, the city offers a variety of flight-related museums and events, as well as a variety of other cultural and recreational activities. Housing is varied and affordable, as are shopping, restaurants, and entertainment districts. Many state and local parks are available for biking, swimming, hiking, and boating. If students want to explore beyond Dayton, they can reach Cincinnati or Columbus in a 50–75 minute drive.
