At Virginia Law, “students are challenged to determine how and why the law developed in a certain way, whether it accomplishes its intended purpose, and how changes in the law might affect social behavior. In addition, Virginia encourages students to think about law in historical, sociological, and economic contexts.” (Virginia Law Website)

First year students complete coursework in the traditional substantive areas, a course on research and writing, and two electives. During their second and third years, students have over 200 courses and seminars from which to choose in addition other opportunities such as various fellowships, clinical placements and five international exchange programs in Germany, Australia, England, Israel and Tokyo. One interesting fellowship option offered by Virginia Law is the Dillard Fellow Program. Through such program, “Dillard Fellows work directly with first-year students, teaching research methods, reviewing and commenting on papers, and generally assisting students with their research and writing needs.” (Virginia Law Website)

For those interested in pursuing a joint degree, Virginia Law offers the J.D./M.A., J.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.U.E.P., J.D./M.P.H., J.D./M.S. and external combined-degree programs in Public International Law.

In addition, for those seeking an advanced degree, the school offers LL.Ms and the S.J.D.s.
